“Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows” (A2s2) is what occurs to a terrified Trinculo as he hides from a bellowing spectre under the cloak of a drowned islander. Things start to go better when the ghost turns out to be his friend Stephano, but become surreal when the drowned islander under the cloak turns out to be Caliban the bestial offspring of the long-dead witch Sycorax. Bedevilled by spirits, monsters and drink, Trinculo is not relieved until reunited with his King and company.
